Snohomish Conservation District offers the following lessons to middle school classrooms. These lessons focus on water conservation and prepare students to proactively engage with water quality issues in their communities. These high-quality, engaging, hands-on science lessons are provided FREE to classrooms in Snohomish County and on Camano Island. Materials, take-homes, and enthusiastic education staff included!

Water Quality Monitoring with Chemical Test Kits

How does your local stream or lake measure up? Using a variety of real water quality testing equipment to gather current data, student scientists will evaluate the health of a local waterbody in this lab lesson. Students will learn about sources of pollution and discuss steps they can take at home to maintain water quality and reduce pollution in their local watershed.

*The Water Quality lessons can be done as a two part series to cover chemical tests and macroinvertebrate sampling of the same waterbody

PLEASE NOTE! Though not required, access to a stream, lake, or even a stormwater retention pool enhances this lesson! If at all possible, please arrange for your classroom to meet our educators outside.

Water Quality Monitoring with Live Benthic Macroinvertebrates

What can water bugs tell us about pollution? During this hands-on lab, students will learn how pollution affects aquatic life. Using live macroinvertebrates from a local stream, students will gather data to complete a biological analysis of water quality and discuss simple steps that they and their families can take to improve water quality.

***In order to protect salmon in streams, this lesson is not offered Nov 1-Feb 28***
