Lawns to Lettuce... and Cinnamon Rolls

A sunny and warm day on Camano Island greeted participants of the inaugural Lawns to Lettuce workshop. We learned lots, from the history of lawns, how to plant veggie starts in a prepared bed, and the amazing-ness of the soils under our feet. Everyone got to learn how to build a simple raised bed, how to sheet-mulch to prepare a planting bed, and some even joined in to help finish sheet-mulching a fenced garden area.

Jon and Elaine Stevens of The Open Gate Farm were wonderfully hospitable hosts, providing us with their facilities and expertise, a tour of their farm, a friendly neighbor that let us park in their field, and fantastic cinnamon rolls!

Our thanks also go out to:

  • Ace Hardware Camano Plaza for donated door prizes
  •  Lenz Enterprises for donated compost
  • Stanwood Country Store for donated straw bales
  • the Triangle Cove PIC program that helped fund the workshop, Island County Public Health and the Washington Department of Health

And to all the people who took time out of their Saturday to learn, enjoy, and help us kick off a fun new program -Lawns to Lettuce!

Don't forget to submit your photos to be entered to win great garden related prizes!
